Ayalon 3rd track Project
Ayalon Corridor is the main bottleneck of the entire Israel Railways.
In 2005 an “Ayalon 3rd track project” was launched. In addition to the construction of an engineering infrastructure for the third track, an old relay interlocking replacement project was launched too for the first time without disrupting the regular traffic.
As a result of above project, the capacity in Ayalon Corridor has been increased from 6 to 10 trains per hour in one direction.

24 level crossings with Honeywell radar scanner Project
In the years 2005-2006, two fatal accidents occurred at Israel Railways level crossings.
As a long-term solution it was decided to replace a level crossings by bridges; but in the short-term, the decision was to equip the most dangerous level crossings by the most advanced systems:Full-barrier with the radar scanner.
This project was established within 18 months and gave an immediate and significant improvement of safety level at railway level crossings.

First NTCC in Haifa
The first ESTW L90 electronic interlocking at Israel Railways had been taking into operation on year 2000, in parallel with the operation of the old SpDrL-72 relay interlocking. Electronic interlocking was operated from a local centre in Lod, relay signalling was operated from mother stations via a Motorola remote control system.
On 2004 was decided to consolidate all types of command and control systems into one centre.
Such a centre had been taken into operation in 2008 in Haifa and included:
Command 900 operation system
ARAMIS dispatcher system
Automatic Train Routing System
8 operators workplaces
6 Dispatchers workplaces
communication, radio, and etc.

Local Operation System for Marshalling Yards (Patent 258182, 30.07.2021)
In 2012-2014, in order to streamline the operation of trains in the marshalling yards and significant reducing the costs of command and control system, the local operation system was developed and has been taking into operation in Israel Railway Yards. The LOS included a central computer with routs settings system, a laser scanner for identifying trains and workers, and optical elements on the track for presenting a moving route to the train driver.
The LOS is currently operated in 3 Israel marshalling yards:
Beer Sheva, Lod and Ashkelon.
A patent has been registered for the system.

Replacement of old relay interlocking SpDrL-72
The old interlocking system SpDrL-72 is in after EoL, not suitable for train electrification and not suitable for ERTMS. It was decided to replace 23 old signalling stations by ESTW electronic interlocking system.
The replacement is performed without to trains traffic disturbance.
In 2023 the last 8 stations will be replaced.

Short Block Section solution on AYALON Corridor
Even after taking into operation of the 3rd track, Ayalon Corridor continued to be a critical bottleneck of the all railway network in Israel. In the years 2010-2012, a special solution was designed and implemented for the Ayalon Corridor, which included 700-m-sections and the operation of 60(!) speed checker devices so that, point orientated ATP INDUSI system became as a continuous one.
This solution made it possible to increase capacity from 10 to 14 trains/h without additional track and as the result of this project - increasing number of passengers from 36 Million up to 70 million per year.
On 10/2013 an article about the project was published in Railway Gazette.

ETCS L2 Project.
In 2011, an accident of two passenger trains occurred for the first time on the Israel Railways (fortunately at low speed, without fatalities). The INDUSI system currently has been operated in Israel is not capable to prevent accidents at low speeds and short distances that exist on the Israel Railways. The ETCS L2 system was chosen as a solution to improve safety and to increase the capacity of trains in the network’s critical bottlenecks. The main systems:
ETCS trackside: 2.3.0d Thales
ETCS onboard: 2.3.0d/3.4.0 Bombardier, Alstom, Siemens
Data radio: GSM-R Nokia / Motorola
